This cinematic firefighter portrait was created in collaboration with photographer Daniel Cunningham, known for his ability to bring out authentic, powerful moments in his subjects. His portraiture is grounded in sensitivity and strength — qualities that elevated this image from concept to execution.
Daniel captured the subject in studio, and I handled the post-production — retouching, background design, and compositing. The environment was built using photography I captured during a live controlled burn with the fire department. Smoke, embers, and lighting were carefully layered and balanced to create a grounded, immersive atmosphere.
Daniel’s work has been recognized internationally, including multiple selections in Lürzer’s Archive’s 200 Best Ad Photographers, and as a winner in both American Photography Issue 39 and Issue 41. You can explore more of his work at danielclarkcunningham.com.
This collaboration is a visual tribute to first responders — and to the power of portraiture that connects through storytelling and craft.
